Memory Care

We’re building a collection of dementia-friendly books. This collection is specially formatted reading materials with short text, simple layouts, and high-interest. Our collection includes fiction and nonfiction illustrated texts.

Nonfiction books are valuable for people with dementia. Books that contain scientific and medical information about dementia can build awareness of the disability’s impacts on health and wellbeing, while memoirs can offer a sense of how to navigate dementia from a clinical, interpersonal, and social standpoint. Biographies and other books about history are helpful to spark readers’ memories and provoke conversations about their own pasts. The image showcases a section of a library dedicated to memory care. At the top of the display, there is a sign that reads "NEW MEMORY CARE SECTION," highlighting resources designed to support individuals dealing with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Below the sign, bullet points outline the types of materials available, including adult picture books for mental stimulation and conversation prompting, chapter books with short paragraphs and large fonts, and caregiver resources.

In the foreground, three books are prominently featured. The first is titled “A Picture Book of BUTTERFLIES,” illustrated with colorful butterflies against a floral backdrop. To its right is a green book titled “STORIES 24 FOR DEMENTIA PATIENTS” by Theresa Heart, which features an illustration of an older couple with a brain motif behind them. Several other books in various colors and sizes are partially visible in the background on shelves, indicating a well-stocked library.
